Our Story
Tucked away on a quiet sidetrack along the famous Ring of Kerry, overlooking the stunning Slievaduff Valley, stands our little piece of history, The Strawberryfield Pancake Cottage.
The old dormer farmhouse, once home to the Downing family (pictured on the right), has been part of the local landscape for more than 200 years. After lying empty for seven years, it was lovingly brought back to life when Peter and Margaret Kerssens bought it in early 1997. They moved in that February and by summer, had transformed the cottage into a cosy café and restaurant.
Originally from the Netherlands, Peter and Margaret poured their creativity and hard work into every corner. Peter’s love of building and renovating paired perfectly with Margaret’s artistic eye and passion for food. At first, the café served toasted sandwiches and evening dinners, but in 2004 they decided to focus solely on Dutch-style pancakes, using Margaret’s mother’s cherished family recipe. It was the best idea they ever had!
Since then, The Strawberryfield Pancake Cottage has become a destination in itself, drawing visitors from near and far to enjoy our sweet and savoury pancakes, all freshly made to order. We take pride in using fresh, local ingredients and in keeping food waste to a minimum. Our natural spring water, drawn from the cottage’s own well, adds an extra touch of purity to every cup of coffee and tea.
The cottage keeps its traditional Irish charm with warm, inviting spaces, Margaret’s paintings on the walls, and the comforting glow of a wood-burning stove. Prints of her artwork are available for purchase, with all proceeds going to the Kerry Palliative Care Unit in her memory.
In 2021, the family business was proudly passed on to daughters Yosta and Mayra. Today, Mayra carries on her parents’ legacy, while Yosta has ventured into her own creative path, she even designed and built this very website!
Our craft shop showcases beautiful handmade gifts from local artists, along with our own cast-iron teapots and Mayra’s handmade ceramics, each one crafted with care right here at The Strawberryfield Pancake Cottage.
We’re proud to have a team of friendly local staff from the surrounding area who bring warmth, laughter and genuine Irish hospitality to every table.
A cosy fire, stunning valley views, and pancakes made with love, that’s what The Strawberryfield Pancake Cottage is all about!
